How a Local Drainage Channel Was Transformed Into a Beautiful Public Park

A recently completed $1.1 million renovation project has turned a local drainage channel into a vibrant green space. This project helps manage heavy rains and improves water quality while giving local residents a brand-new place to exercise and enjoy nature.

The project is a great example of green infrastructure. By restoring 100 acres of natural habitat and planting thousands of trees, local leaders have created a space that helps the environment and the community at the same time. The highlight of this recent phase is a new paved path for walking and bicycling that stretches for about half a mile.

What is Green Infrastructure?

In many towns and cities, rainwater and melted snow flow off roofs, driveways, and roads. This water is called stormwater runoff. Usually, runoff goes straight into concrete pipes and drains, which carry it away to nearby rivers. However, this water often carries dirt, trash, and chemicals with it.

Green infrastructure is a different way of handling stormwater. Instead of hiding the water in concrete pipes, green infrastructure uses soil, plants, and trees to slow down and clean the water naturally. For this project, workers planted 5,000 new trees and shrubs along the drainage corridor. These plants absorb water like giant sponges, which keeps the local drainage system from getting overwhelmed during heavy storms.

Where the Water Flows

The upgraded drainage channel is located just south of Metropolitan Parkway, running from Ryan Road on the west to Schoenherr Road on the east. At the end of this stretch, it connects with a larger drainage system. About 20% of the city's stormwater and snowmelt passes through this channel.

This work was completed in stages. The first stage of the cleanup was finished a few years ago, focusing on the area between Van Dyke Road and Schoenherr Road. This newest phase continues that work, creating a continuous green corridor. Ultimately, the water that flows through this system makes its way into the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair.

How Plants Clean Our Water

When heavy rain falls on paved streets, it picks up pollutants. Because the surrounding area has many homes, businesses, and roads, the water can become very dirty. Environmental experts explain that the newly planted trees, shrubs, and wild plants act as a natural filter. They catch pollutants before the water moves further downstream.

By trapping these materials, the project prevents harmful substances from reaching larger lakes and rivers. Each year, the newly renovated green space is expected to filter out:

  • 50,000 pounds of dirt and sediment that would otherwise muddy local waters.
  • 4,500 pounds of nitrogen, a common chemical found in fertilizers and runoff.
  • 800 pounds of phosphorus, another chemical that can harm aquatic ecosystems.

Keeping these chemicals out of the water is highly important for local wildlife. When too much nitrogen and phosphorus enter a lake, they act like food for tiny water plants called algae. This can cause massive algae blooms. These blooms grow quickly, covering the surface of the water and blocking sunlight. When the algae eventually dies and rots, it uses up the oxygen in the water, making it very difficult for fish and other underwater creatures to survive.

How the Project Was Funded

Transforming this drainage channel required cooperation and funding from several different groups. The total cost of the second phase of the project was $1.1 million. Here is how the funding was shared:

  • The local city government contributed slightly more than $400,000 to pay for the new walking and biking trail.
  • A national wildlife conservation group provided a grant of $415,000.
  • A federal funding program contributed $50,000 specifically to pay for the new trees.
  • Two local energy utility companies provided grants of $40,000 and $4,000.
  • The remaining $187,000 came from county and local drainage district funds.

A New Space for the Community

In addition to helping the environment, the project provides a major benefit for local residents. The new half-mile path offers a safe, paved space where people can walk, run, and ride their bikes. It also connects to a larger network of trails in the area, making it easier for people to travel without needing a car.

Planning experts note that projects like this work best when they serve multiple purposes. When a city builds a plain concrete drain, it only helps with water. But when a city builds a wetland with a walking path around it, the project becomes a public park. This makes the neighborhood more beautiful and encourages residents to support future environmental projects.
