Tried out the potato battery trick this past weekend, actually! Managed to get a small LED glowing, though I’ll admit, the brightness faded off after a couple hours. Seems like it’s more of a short-term solution—enough for an emergency or maybe getting you through a few hours of darkness. Did experiment with lining the potatoes up in series to see if I could eke out a bit more juice, and it did help some, but you’re not getting floodlights from spuds, that’s for sure. Still, it’s hard not to be a bit impressed that something so simple (and usually destined for soup) can give you a bit of light at all.
Has anyone tried using sweet potatoes instead of regular ones? Wondering if the extra sugars make any difference, or if the classic Idaho type is really the way to go. Also, I’m thinking about mixing the potato battery setup with the solar hacks—maybe use the solar panel to top off a rechargeable battery and the potato as backup after sundown. Anyone else tinkering with combo approaches like that?
