Top divers join perilous mission to recover Italian tourists’ remains from Maldives sea cave

A Tragic Mission: Recovery Efforts to Find Italian Divers in Maldives

World-renowned cave divers have gathered in the Maldives, intensifying the search operation to locate the bodies of four Italian tourists who tragically lost their lives while scuba diving. This followed a devastating event where a military officer died during the recovery mission.

International Support

Three divers from Finland, recognized for their expertise in scuba safety, have arrived in the Maldives. They are set to partner with the local coast guard to devise a strategic plan to successfully complete the mission as told by the chief government spokesperson of the Maldives.

"These divers were recommended by Italy due to their extensive experience in deep and cave diving worldwide", the spokesperson explained.

An additional diving specialist is anticipated to join the team from Finland, and they are expecting specialist equipment from Australia and the UK.

The Incident

Five Italian divers, part of a scuba diving expedition with 20 other Italian nationals, tragically lost their lives after exploring the Vaavu Atoll. The body of the diving instructor was discovered at the entrance of the cave, leading authorities to speculate that the remaining four divers may still be inside.

The missing divers are recognized professionals in their fields: an associate professor of ecology and her daughter, a marine biologist, and a researcher.

The Complexity of the Recovery Effort

The recovery mission has already claimed another life, emphasizing the dangerous and complex nature of the endeavor. A senior military diver, 43, tragically lost his life during a second recovery mission into the cave. The cave is 70 meters (230 feet) deep - equivalent to the height of a 20-story building - and 200 meters long.

"This shows just how challenging this dive is", the spokesperson mentioned.

The fallen diver was diving in pairs, following protocol. Upon their return to the surface, his partner realized something had gone wrong. The rest of the team promptly jumped in to attempt a rescue.

He was honored in a full military funeral ceremony in Malé, where thousands paid their respects including the President, tourism and military officials, and foreign ambassadors.

Difficult Conditions

Rescue dives are restricted to approximately three hours due to oxygen and decompression needs. During one of the recovery operations, two divers marked the cave entrance by sending a balloon to the water’s surface. This enabled the remaining crew to swim directly towards it, utilizing their time more efficiently.

However, the dive conditions are extraordinarily challenging due to unpredictable strong currents, narrow passages, a huge chamber, and complete darkness throughout.

"You have to be an expert for this level of diving," the spokesperson added.

Before resurfacing, divers must spend time in shallow water to decompress after ascending from the cave’s depths. It is believed that the military diver died from complications during this process.

Questions about Dive’s Legality

An investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain what happened to the divers and how they managed to reach such depths. "For recreational and commercial diving, by law, nobody is allowed to go further than 30 meters and unfortunately, this appears to have happened a lot deeper because even the cave’s mouth is almost 50 meters under," the spokesperson said.

The license of the vessel has been temporarily suspended pending the results of the investigation. The lawyer of the Italian tour operator managing the diving trip denied any knowledge or authorization of the deep dive, stating that crossing the 30-meter threshold needs special permission from the maritime authorities.

Italian Connection

The Maldives, which welcomed more than 2 million tourists in 2025, has a substantial reliance on tourism. Italy maintains a significant presence in the Maldives’ tourism market. The impact of this tragedy extends beyond the loss of lives, as it has deeply affected both the local and Italian communities.

The governments of the Maldives and Italy have been in contact "at the highest level," with the president of the Maldives extending his "deepest condolences" to the Italian president and the families of the victims

Such a heartbreaking loss for all involved. I can't even imagine the courage it must take for these divers to attempt a recovery in such dangerous conditions—why were they allowed so deep?
