Same here—the shavings make a mess and it always takes me ages to get a decent spark. Switched to a small ferro rod, much less frustrating in a pinch.

Mixing beeswax in helps a ton, especially if you’re going to be out in damp places—it keeps the lint from clumping up or soaking through. Never thought to try it until last winter, but it’s a game changer.
