What’s In Your “Get Home” Bag These Days?

Curious what gear folks are carrying in their get home bags lately. Has anyone updated for recent supply shortages or added anything for civil unrest situations? Looking to refresh mine and could use some ideas.

Rotated a few things in mine after the past year. Kept the basics—multi-tool, water filter, first aid, flashlight (with spare batteries), and a couple of protein bars. I did add a compact crowbar (just one from the hardware store, nothing fancy) after seeing some of the blocked routes during protests last year. Also, switched out my old face covering for a better mask that’s good for both dust and crowds, and tossed in a small bottle of pepper spray.

One thing I realized: cash is getting trickier to use in some spots, but it’s still in my bag. Tucked in an old phone charger and one of those cheap “burner” phones too, just in case. Didn’t really update my water, though I’m thinking about adding some extra purification tablets. Has anybody tried those new UV water purifiers? Wondering if they’re worth the extra weight compared to tabs.

For food, I stick to a couple of high-calorie bars and dried fruit, but I’m thinking about switching to those military rations—they last forever, but

Swapped out my old map for a current city transit map—never know when GPS will quit. Anyone else carrying paper maps again, or is that overkill now?

Crowbar’s a solid addition, especially these days. I’ve always carried a multitool and a sturdy fixed-blade, but lately I swapped in a folding saw as well—ran across some downed branches last fall that really slowed things down, and a compact saw barely takes up space. For masks, I keep both a heavy-duty N95 and a simple bandana, just for layered options. Haven’t personally tried UV water purifiers, but a buddy swears by his SteriPen. I stick to old-school tablets—lighter, nothing to break, less worry about batteries. Tablets

Paper maps aren’t overkill at all—electronics fail when you least expect it. Anyone else pack a whistle or emergency blanket? Those are my underrated favorites.
