What’s One Skill Every Prepper Should Master First?

If you could only pick one skill to really master for emergency preparedness, what would it be? I keep going back and forth between fire-making and water purification. Both seem so basic but absolutely fundamental. Curious what others think is truly the starting point for skills—especially for folks just getting serious about prepping. Is there something you wish you’d prioritized sooner?

Being able to reliably find and purify water always tops my list—without it, none of the other skills really matter. Ever tried filtering pond water with just what’s in your pack?

Absolutely—water’s always my top priority too. It’s amazing how quickly things go downhill once you can’t hydrate. I practiced making DIY filters and solar stills in my yard, and even that felt harder than expected! Honestly, I wish I’d known more about different purification methods earlier. Ever tried boiling versus chemical tablets—any preferences for taste or reliability?
