What’s the Most Overlooked Item in Your Bug Out Bag?

When I go through bug out bag checklists, I keep noticing the same items over and over—water, fire starters, knives, first aid. But from what I’ve seen teaching first aid classes, so many people forget to pack extra prescription meds or even just basic pain relievers and antidiarrheals. Just one day without those and things can go downhill fast, especially under stress.

On a similar note, I rarely see anyone mention a pair of sturdy work gloves. I learned the hard way clearing brush and debris that even a small cut or blister can turn nasty out in the field. Do you all pack spares? Or has anyone found a specific brand that holds up for the long haul?

Curious what other “minor” essentials people have ended up needing in real emergencies

Dental floss has saved me more than once—not just for teeth, but for repairs and even fishing. Anyone else carry it, or am I the only one a bit obsessed?

Tweezers get overlooked a lot—splinters or ticks can become a real problem fast. Anyone actually used a mini sewing kit when out, or is that just me?

Reading these replies, I'm surprised how few folks mention a basic bandana—absolute workhorse in the field. Mine’s patched up and faded, but worth its weight for everything from filtering water (in a pinch) to wrapping up sore joints, making a sling, or protecting my neck from the sun. I’ve even used one as a makeshift coffee filter once. Just feels like one of those old-school tricks that's stuck around for good reason.
