What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Solution?
Curious what folks here rely on for backup power if/when the grid goes down for longer spells. I’ve experimented with a small solar generator (Goal Zero Yeti 400), mainly to keep lights/communications going, but it’s not robust enough to power any larger appliances or heat sources. Battery banks are handy for phones, but obviously not a full solution.
Gas generators seem reliable short-term, but the fuel doesn’t store forever and they’re noisy—not ideal if you’re trying to stay low-profile. I’ve looked into some DIY solar setups and even considered a small wind turbine but haven’t pulled the trigger yet; I’m in a semi-wooded area, so curious how those do with variable sun/wind.
Does anybody here have experience with low-maintenance, long-term backup setups? Particularly interested in any solar/wind combos that aren’t crazy expensive or finicky to maintain. Also, how do you factor in battery lifespan and replacement cycles into your plan? If anyone’s tried running essential appliances (freezers, medical devices, etc.) off-grid for a week or more, would love to hear how it’s gone and what
