What’s Your Go-To Backup Water Source?

When it comes to water preps, I know we all have our main supplies, but what’s everyone’s fallback plan if those first lines fail? I’ve stocked up on bottled and have two rain barrels, but if we get a long-term disruption, that’s not gonna cut it. I’ve considered setting up a hand pump on my old well, but it’s a big project and not cheap.

Those with surface water nearby—how do you handle filtration and purification, especially if it’s stagnant or seasonal? Also curious if anyone has luck with portable options like the Sawyer or Berkey filters over time. Do they really hold up if you’re pulling from nasty sources?

Some folks around here suggested sand filters combined with solar stills, but seems like a lot of work for not much yield unless you really have to. Interested to hear if anyone relies

Long-term water always keeps me up at night, since stockpiles run dry faster than folks realize. I do have a hand pump rigged to an old well, but you’re right—setup’s a pain if you haven’t got one already. When it comes to surface water, I’ve learned to treat every pond or creek as suspect, especially in the hotter months when things get murky.

Over the years I’ve rotated a few filters—Sawyer MINI, LifeStraw, even an older Katadyn pocket filter—but real talk, none of those will handle heavy silt or algae for long… they clog, and backflushing doesn’t always save ‘em if the water’s really grimy
