What’s Your Go-To DIY Water Filtration Method?

Gravity filters work well for me at home, but I’m curious what folks use in a pinch out in the field. Anyone tried making a bio-sand filter with local materials? Wondering about long-term reliability if you’re stuck without commercial gear.
 
Bio-sand filters are surprisingly effective if you can get the layering right—sand, gravel, charcoal, even some cloth if you’ve got it. I’ve thrown one together at the campsite a few times and the water came out clear, though I always boil it after just to be safe. Biggest hassle I found is waiting for the filtration if you’re thirsty now! Anyone figured out

I’ve actually put together a bio-sand filter a couple of times, mostly as a personal experiment using buckets, gravel from the yard, sand from the garden, and a layer of activated charcoal I made by charring some wood. Long-term reliability, MeadowWhisperer, does depend a lot on maintenance—keeping any scum or debris scraped off the top, and making sure the sand doesn’t get clogged. It’s not entirely set-and-forget, in my experience
