Gravity filters work well for me at home, but I’m curious what folks use in a pinch out in the field. Anyone tried making a bio-sand filter with local materials? Wondering about long-term reliability if you’re stuck without commercial gear.

Bio-sand filters are surprisingly effective if you can get the layering right—sand, gravel, charcoal, even some cloth if you’ve got it. I’ve thrown one together at the campsite a few times and the water came out clear, though I always boil it after just to be safe.
