Guess I always circle back to a portable solar charger. It’s not as sexy as a good blade or as classic as duct tape, but jazz gigs and star watching got me hooked on having power when there’s none to be found. I can keep small essentials running—headlamp, ham radio, even charge up a phone or e-reader if it comes to that. Sometimes I use it to top off a weather radio or charge up AA/AAA batteries for other gear. I’d say that flexibility earns its spot in my kit above almost anything, especially for real off-grid situations where you’re not sure how long you’ll be out.
I used to be a fire starter diehard, but once I started thinking about longer-term scenarios (plus a couple of cold, cloudy stretches camping), solar just crept its way up the list. Only catch is you gotta remember to unfold it early, not wait till you’re desperate—sunlight’s patient, not fast.
Anybody have experience with those roll-up solar mats vs the little suitcase panels? Been considering swapping mine if there’s a big difference.
