What’s Your Go-To Item For Unexpected Power Outages?

When the lights go out unexpectedly, I always reach for my old wind-up lantern first. Doesn’t rely on batteries, and I know I can count on it after a few cranks. Over the years I’ve tried all sorts—LEDs, candles, even those glow sticks, but nothing seems as reliable as something I can power up myself.

I keep it in a central spot so I’m never digging for it in the dark. Of course, I’ve got a stash of charged battery banks for the phone and radio
 
Candles and oil lamps used to be my mainstays, but after a close call with a spilled lamp a few years back, I switched to a mix of solar-powered lanterns and rechargeable flashlights. I keep one charging on a sunny windowsill at all times, so even in a stretch of cloudy days, it’s usually got enough juice for several hours. Funny, I’m the same way—those hand-cranked lanterns are the only thing I can always trust to work, even if I forget to leave something charging. Have you found one brand lasts longer than others, GarnetDusk?
