What’s Your Go-To Item For Unexpected Power Outages?

When the lights go out unexpectedly, I always reach for my old wind-up lantern first. Doesn’t rely on batteries, and I know I can count on it after a few cranks. Over the years I’ve tried all sorts—LEDs, candles, even those glow sticks, but nothing seems as reliable as something I can power up myself.

I keep it in a central spot so I’m never digging for it in the dark. Of course, I’ve got a stash of charged battery banks for the phone and radio

Candles and oil lamps used to be my mainstays, but after a close call with a spilled lamp a few years back, I switched to a mix of solar-powered lanterns and rechargeable flashlights. I keep one charging on a sunny windowsill at all times, so even in a stretch of cloudy days, it’s usually got enough juice for several hours. It’s nice not worrying about having the “right” batteries on hand when the power blinks out. The old

Funny, I’m the same way—those hand-cranked lanterns are the only thing I can always trust to work, even if I forget to leave something charging. Have you found one brand lasts longer than others, GarnetDusk?

That’s smart, keeping it on the windowsill charged up—nothing beats the peace of mind of a fully juiced lamp, especially if you end up with days of rain. Do you find it holds the charge well over time?

Hand-cranked radio with a built-in flashlight is my must-have—never run out of light or news updates that way. Anyone else keep extra candles handy just in case?

Flashlights are my first grab when the power cuts out, but not just any old ones—rechargeable LED with a backup battery and, if I can help it, a solar panel built in. I keep two in the kitchen drawer and another in my bedside table (old habit from night shifts, I suppose). For longer outages, I like having a couple of those little solar garden lights around; plop ‘em in the sun during the day, and they’ll light up a room just enough after sunset—bonus points because the grandkids won’t burn themselves like with candles.

That said, I do still keep a stash of candles for backup, but I’m picky about where and when I use them, especially with younger ones around or if the dog’s in a mischief mood. A hand-crank radio’s also always nearby, and I can vouch for how helpful it is to hear updates when you’re sitting in the dark, just waiting.

Anyone else had good luck with rechargeable lanterns, or found a brand that actually lasts? I’ve had a few die on me quicker than I’d like
