What’s Your Go-To Item for Unexpected Power Outages?

If the power cuts out unexpectedly, I always reach for my crank-powered lantern first. It’s reliable even when all the batteries in the house seem to have drained themselves, and I don’t have to waste fuel on it. Plus, if I’m in a rush, the light is immediate compared to waiting for an oil lamp.

I try to keep candles and oil lamps as backup, but honestly, I worry about open flames if I’m moving around a lot. I keep a small radio with the same hand-crank system, so I can get news updates or weather alerts.

Curious what everyone else prioritizes. Do you go for flashlights, or have you invested in solar lighting setups? I’ve been considering a solar generator, but I’d like to hear if folks have had luck with those during longer outages, especially in cloudy weather.

Also, any tips for keeping fridge food cold using low-tech means? I use ice blocks in coolers but sometimes they melt quicker than I’d like if the outage drags on. Appreciate any tricks or gadgets that have worked for you during those long, dark nights.
