What’s Your Go-To Item in a Blackout?

When the power goes out, first thing I grab is my hand-crank lantern. No batteries to worry about. Curious what single item folks here reach for first—solar charger, oil lamp, something else? Always looking to improve my setup.

That hand-crank lantern is a smart move—mine’s always in arm’s reach, too. I like that you don’t have to depend on batteries, especially if the blackout drags on. For me, though, I grab my battery-powered

Oil lamps are my number one for blackouts. I keep a couple stashed in key spots around the house, along with a little jug of lamp oil (smells nicer than kerosene, and somehow feels cozier). Candles are handy, but I find the steady glow from an oil lamp makes it much easier to read or move around safely at night—plus, you can adjust the brightness.

Hand-crank lanterns are clever, but my hands get tired if I try to use them for more than a few minutes at a stretch. I like things that just work without needing much fuss, especially if the outage lasts through the evening. It’s surprising how much comfort a gentle light adds when things

Absolutely agree—the steady, adjustable light from an oil lamp feels almost soothing during a blackout. Ever had any issues with smoke or spills, or is it pretty fuss-free for you?

Oil lamps really do give off a calming vibe, but I always worry about spills with grandkids running around. Do you have a trick for keeping them extra stable?

I’m with you on the hand-crank lantern, but if it’s a long night, I actually reach for my oil lamp first—it’s easier on my hands and gives off that cozy, steady light that helps me stay calm.

Hand-crank lanterns are definitely reliable, but I admit my first instinct is to grab the rechargeable LED headlamp I keep by the door. Being hands-free is such a big help, especially if I’m checking breakers or helping my neighbor carry her thermos upstairs in the dark. I do keep a solar charger handy for my phone and batteries—takes a while to juice things up, but it’s better than nothing if the blackout stretches out.

Oil lamps are cozy, but after a few close calls with grandkids and pets, I try to stick to battery and solar options these days. One thing I’ve noticed is, no matter how prepared I am, I always end up wanting more light in the kitchen, so now I store a couple of small tap lights in the cupboards just in case.

Curious, TeaTimeTalisman—have you ever used a hand-crank radio/lantern combo? I find the radio side comforting during storms, plus it’s reassuring to get updates when everything else is off
