What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

I keep noticing folks focus on the big ticket items, but sometimes it’s the simple things that slip through the cracks. For me, I’d say a basic sewing kit is easily overlooked—especially heavy-duty needles and thread. You can patch up clothes, gear, even shoes, and it hardly takes up any space. What do you all think gets missed most often? Any item you once forgot, then realized you really needed?

Absolutely agree about the sewing kit—those heavy-duty needles have saved my bacon more than once, especially with grandkids tearing through jeans. Another thing I always overlooked were reading glasses (cheap extras in every kit). It’s no good having instructions, maps, or fine work to do if you can’t see properly! Funny how the smallest fixes can turn into the biggest frustrations if you don’t have the right tool at hand.

Toothbrushes, honestly—people forget spares all the time! Ever tried to keep your teeth clean with just a rag? Not fun. Anyone else stash extra personal hygiene stuff?

Patching up shoes is a great point, and I’ll admit I forgot to put in a curved needle for repair work the first time I made a kit—tried fixing a boot with a straight one and it was a comedy of errors. For me, the most overlooked item has been safety pins. I know it sounds silly, but they’re so handy for quick fixes—closing a hole, holding bandages, even hanging up wet socks to dry if you’re in a pinch. I used to always forget them until I ripped my coat and had nothing but duct tape (messy, but not ideal on fabric).

Little things like nail clippers or tweezers sneak off my list too, especially when I’m busy swapping out food supplies or batteries. It’s funny how you can plan for the big emergencies, but something minor—like a splinter—can make life miserable if you’re not prepared. Anyone else stash old-fashioned bar soap? I’ll tuck a small bar in every kit and it always gets used.

Safety pins have saved me more than once—totally agree, they don’t get enough credit! It’s those tiny, multipurpose things that you don’t even notice missing until you really need them. I always toss some in my sewing kit alongside buttons and thread now. And yes, I’m a big fan of bar soap too, especially for washing up when water’s limited. Anyone else still keep matches or do most folks just rely on lighters these days?
