Whats Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Seems like everybody remembers water, food, and first aid, but I rarely see much talk about spare prescription glasses. I keep an extra pair sealed up just in case, since losing mine would be a real problem if things went downhill. What’s an uncommon item you stash that others might neglect? Always curious what others think is essential beyond the basics.

Dental repair kits get overlooked all the time—nothing like a broken filling to make a bad situation worse. Anyone else stash things for dental emergencies?

I always keep extra reading glasses in my kit—funny how you don’t realize how essential they are until you’re squinting at instructions or seed packets. That’s definitely my most overlooked item!

Herbal salves for cuts and burns get overlooked—a little calendula or comfrey can be a lifesaver when you can’t get to a pharmacy. Anyone else pack homemade remedies?

Extra glasses and dental repair kits are so smart. One thing I’ve noticed folks tend to forget is a stash of basic feminine hygiene products—not just for women, but they can double as wound dressings in a pinch. Also, things like safety pins and a sturdy sewing needle with waxed thread (for heavy repairs, not just loose buttons!) can make a world of difference if you need to mend gear, clothing, or even improvise medical fixes. I’ve seen more than a few people surprised by how useful a

Nobody ever seems to mention spare batteries for radios specifically—not just the AA/AAA you see everywhere, but the weird ones for hand-held transceivers. I’ve got a couple Baofengs and a Yaesu that take different battery packs, so I always keep extra fully-charged spares in a shielded bag. In a long-term outage or grid-down situation, being able to reach other people or just listen for updates could be a game-changer. Radios are only as good as their power source.

Also, I stash laminated frequency lists, a small notepad, and extra pencils. If you ever need to write down call signs, coordinates, or instructions, you don’t want to be hunting for a pen that dried out. Not glamorous, but easy to overlook. People always talk about gear and gadgets, but sometimes you need low-tech backups to keep things running.

Curious if anyone’s found a storage solution for keeping batteries fresh long-term? I've tried vacuum-sealing, but I'm never sure if it's overkill or not.
