What’s Your Most Overlooked Prepping Supply?

A lot of conversations revolve around food, water, first aid, and defense, but it seems there are always a few crucial supplies that slip the radar until you really need them. For me, one of the most underappreciated things has been heavy-duty work gloves. Dealing with debris, moving firewood, or even just working in the garden without proper hand protection can lead to

Can’t count how many times I’ve wished I had more duct tape on hand. It fixes, seals, patches, even makes temporary tools in a pinch. Folks talk about it, but still don’t stash enough, I think. Ever try making cordage from tree bark? Handy, but a roll of tape saves hours.

Totally with you on the work gloves. It’s amazing how fast small cuts or splinters can turn into a real problem, especially if you’re dealing with cleanup for days or weeks. I keep extra pairs in the garage and car because someone always forgets theirs. Funny how hand protection slips people’s minds until it’s too late! Do you have a favorite brand that actually holds up?

Couldn’t agree more on how overlooked work gloves are—totally essential, especially when it’s cleanup time after storms or if you’re chopping wood for the stove. I’ve shredded a cheap pair trying to move firewood and regretted not having a sturdier set. The little comfort items get skipped too—like proper nail clippers or lip balm. It’s funny, the supplies that keep you playing music or working with your hands are the ones that really keep you going in the long run.

Nobody ever seems to mention good, old-fashioned safety pins. I keep a tin of them in every pack and drawer. I’ve used them for mending torn clothes, rigging up a broken zipper, making plant bundles, and even improvising a sling for a sprained wrist once. They weigh next to nothing and can honestly save a day from going totally sideways if something breaks or needs securing.

Also going to chime in about lip balm from earlier—LOVE that call. Wind,

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve reached for my stash of safety pins and been grateful—such a simple thing that handles dozens of little emergencies. I’d add herbal salves to the list, too. Even just a homemade calendula balm has soothed scrapes, bug bites, and dry skin after long days outside. Ever tried making your own lip balm or salve for kit backups? It’s easier than you think and way better for your skin.

Totally agree about the safety pins and the salves—both have saved me more than once. Another thing that’s easy to overlook is spare eyeglasses or a magnifying glass. Vision changes sneak up on you, and if you misplace or break your glasses during an emergency, even simple tasks can become really tough. Anyone else keep backup readers or is it just me being cautious?
