What’s Your Most Underrated Survival Skill?

Everyone talks about fire starting or water purification, but I think foraging gets overlooked way too often. Knowing what wild plants are edible—or which ones are medicinal—can change everything when supplies run low. Has anyone here spent serious time practicing plant ID or actually tried relying on foraged food for a few days? Would love to hear tips or book recommendations for deepening those skills.

Couldn’t agree more—plant ID gets lost behind the “bigger” skills but it’s saved me more than once. Best trick I picked up is learning a few edible weeds common to your local parks or backyard—dandelion, plantain, chickweed. Field guides with detailed photos are a must, and honestly, nothing beats hands-on walks with someone local who knows their stuff. Ever made a meal with mostly wild greens? It’s not glamorous but it sure fills you up!

Dandelion and plantain are two of my all-time favorites as well—so many folks don’t realize how nutritious those “weeds” are. Chickweed is great for salads, but I find it’s easy to confuse with other greens if you’re not careful. Do you have any tips for making sure you’re picking the right plant every time? I always say, go

Taste and smell are helpful but I always double-check with at least two field guides before picking—mistakes can get nasty fast. Ever tried making chickweed pesto?

Chickweed pesto is surprisingly good—brighter than basil, honestly! Ever tried adding in wild garlic or violets for a twist? Makes it feel a bit fancier.
