Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term?

Storing water safely for the long haul has me stumped a bit. Food-grade barrels seem popular, but what about rotation frequency and preventing algae/mold? Do folks recommend adding unscented bleach, or is there a better method? I’ve read mixed things about water preserver concentrates. Looking for advice on practical setups and any pitfalls folks have run into with storage containers breaking down or imparting odd tastes.

Food-grade barrels with tight lids have worked best for me—just gotta keep them out of direct sunlight to avoid algae growth. I stick to unscented bleach: 1/4 teaspoon per gallon, then seal it up tight. Rotating every 6-12 months keeps things fresh and helps spot any funky taste early. Haven’t had luck with those preserver concentrates, seemed to leave an aftertaste. Anyone here ever try glass carboys for long-term, or is plastic still king?
