Whats Your Top Prep for Grid Down Scenarios?

When I think of true grid-down situations, water security always jumps to the front of my mind. A lot of folks stockpile food and fuel, which is vital, but I figure a reliable water source and purification options are non-negotiable. I’ve invested in a couple of decent gravity filters, plus some old-school ceramic setups, just in case.

Water definitely tops my list, too. I’ve seen how quickly municipal systems can get overloaded after just a minor storm, so in a real grid-down event, I don’t want to rely on luck. Besides the Berkey and a couple of Sawyer filters, I keep a stash of unscented bleach for backup purification (never hurts to have options if filters clog or break). I also cached some rain collection barrels in the backyard—those have come in handy even during regular dry spells!

Lighting is another thing I focus on. Solar lanterns and a crank radio/flashlight give me peace of mind. Candles are nice, but they make me nervous about fire risk, especially if you’re dealing with stress or kids around.

Curious if anyone has tried DIY sand-and-charcoal filters, or is that more trouble than it’s worth? I’ve always wondered about their effectiveness if

Tried making a sand-and-charcoal filter once—worked ok for clarity, but I’d still run that water through something better for real safety. Ever try boiling plus filter as a combo?

Boiling first, then running water through a filter, is honestly the safest bet if you’re unsure—just takes more time. Ever tried using calcium hypochlorite for backup?

I’ve used calcium hypochlorite tabs for water storage too—super compact and lasts ages. Ever notice any odd taste, or is that just me being sensitive?
