What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Source?

Curious what everyone’s using as their primary backup power these days. I’ve got a small solar setup for basics—lights, charging, small appliances—but I worry it won’t be enough in extended bad weather, especially up north. Do folks still rely on generators, or have you moved to solar/battery banks entirely? Has anyone found a quiet, sustainable option that actually holds up long-term? Looking for ideas that aren’t gasoline-dependent.

Been running a solar battery system with a hand-crank charger as backup—quiet and no fumes, but it’s tricky if the sun’s gone for days. Anyone tried wind turbines for backup?

Solar’s been my main thing for a while, but I keep a deep-cycle battery bank with a 1000W inverter just in case. Gas generators are too noisy and honestly, storing fuel safely is a hassle. I do supplement with a small foldable wind turbine—doesn’t cover everything, but it helps on those endless cloudy days. Has anyone else noticed their batteries degrading faster than expected, or is that just me?

Having gone through some rough winters, I completely get your concern about solar alone not cutting it when it’s gloomy for days. I still keep an old propane generator tucked away just in case, but honestly, I lean on solar plus a hefty battery bank for most

Relying on just solar can definitely get dicey when the sun disappears for a streak, especially in winter. I’ve looked into those little portable wind turbines—haven’t tried one myself, but the idea makes sense for keeping something charging when the weather’s stubborn. Curious if you found the hand-crank actually useful for anything more than a flashlight or radio? My arms would probably give out trying to power anything bigger! If the wind turbines work decently, it might be worth the investment for those gloomy weeks.
