What’s the Most Overlooked Prep in Your Opinion?

So many folks stockpile food, water and gear, but I rarely see much discussion about sanitation beyond baby wipes and bleach. Long-term waste management seems like the thing that’ll sneak up on people fastest. What practical setups are you all planning if the grid goes down for months? I’m curious if anyone’s actually built or tested a composting toilet or other off-grid sanitation solutions, and how it worked in real conditions.

Sanitation absolutely gets ignored until it's too late. Built a basic sawdust composting toilet last year—works surprisingly well, but managing it in winter's a whole different beast. Anyone tried worm bins?

Composting toilets are so underrated—it’s true most folks don’t think past a bucket and some bleach. Built one out behind my greenhouse and it works, but it’s a learning curve, especially managing temperature and making sure nothing smells. Winter takes more effort, but wood ash and sawdust help a lot. Has anyone added certain plants nearby for extra filtration or odor control?

Managing the temperature really does make all the difference, especially once it gets colder—things just don’t break down as fast. I’ve also found wood ash and sawdust to be lifesavers for odor, but there’s a fine line since too much ash can make things too alkaline. About planting near your
