Emergency Flight Completes Risky Midwinter Rescue From Antarctica
An air crew successfully completed a rare and dangerous medical evacuation, flying an American patient from a remote research station in Antarctica to a hospital in New Zealand. The rescue took place during the extreme cold and darkness of the polar winter, a time when flights to the frozen continent are highly unusual and dangerous.

The co-pilot of the flight explained that these conditions pushed the aircraft to its absolute limits. The plane landed during what is known as nautical twilight. This is a time when there is only a tiny amount of light, making the sky appear almost pitch black. It was so cold that the crew feared the plane's systems might not function properly, as the temperature was right on the edge of what the aircraft could safely handle. The co-pilot noted that the cold was the most intense they had ever experienced.
Racing Against a Closing Window
The rescue team had to act quickly because the weather in Antarctica can change in an instant. In fact, the crew had planned to fly to the ice shelf a day earlier, but they had to cancel that attempt due to a severe snowstorm. This delay created a very tight timeline for the rescue.
There was only a narrow window of opportunity to land the plane, pick up the patient, and take off again before the weather worsened. Because of the extreme cold and darkness, flights like this are incredibly rare. Landing a jet under these conditions is a major challenge that is almost never attempted during the deep winter months.
Once the plane landed on the ice runway, the patient was quickly boarded. The aircraft took off again the very same day, just as the weather at the airstrip began to get worse. The plane flew directly to Christchurch, New Zealand, where the patient could receive advanced medical care.

Upon arriving in New Zealand, the American patient was taken immediately to a local hospital. The patient was admitted in serious condition and continued to receive professional medical treatment.
