Best Skills to Practice Now Before SHTF?

Lately I’ve been wondering which practical skills are most worth prioritizing before things get bad. I’ve got the basics covered—food storage, some water filtration, and a bit of gardening—but I realize that’s only scratching the surface. There are so many directions to go. For those who’ve been doing this a while: what hands-on skills have actually proven vital, or at least given you the most confidence? For example, have you found that knowing basic first aid or small engine repair comes up most? Or maybe plant identification, navigation without GPS, or making improvised tools?

It’s amazing how quickly “little” skills become huge assets when things aren’t running smoothly. Honestly, resourcefulness is the number one thing I’d practice—it ties into everything. Knowing how to improvise tools or fix something with what’s on hand has saved me a lot of grief, both as a nurse and in daily life. For example, making simple splints or water filters from scrap materials could be crucial.

I’d put a big emphasis on basic first aid, but also on things like wound care when supplies are limited, using natural remedies, and safely identifying wild edibles and medicinal plants. Simple sewing and mending is another overlooked skill—clothes, tarps, even shoes will need patching eventually. And bartering is a skill, too; knowing what’s valuable and how to negotiate can really stretch your supplies.
