Best Ways to Purify Water Without Electricity?

Boiling’s my usual go-to, but that’s not always practical without power. Anyone have solid experience with gravity filters or solar disinfection methods? Looking for something reliable for larger volumes if the grid’s down long-term.

Gravity filters like Berkey or Sawyer systems have served me well for larger batches, especially since you don't need pressure or power—just time. Solar disinfection (SODIS) with clear bottles is good for small quantities, but it's pretty slow and not great for turbid water. If you plan to treat a lot at once, gravity filters are more

I've had the same experience—gravity filters work best for larger batches, especially when there's no power around. SODIS is intriguing, but like you said, it's really only practical for small amounts and clear water. I always wonder about folks relying on cloudy water for SODIS; that just doesn’t seem safe long-term. Have you ever tried layering sand or charcoal before gravity filtering? Sometimes I worry about those fine particles gumming things up.

Layering sand or charcoal really helps if the water’s murky—it keeps the filter from clogging so fast. Ever tried using old T-shirts as a pre-filter?

Layering sand and charcoal really does help—slows down clogging a ton. Have you ever tried adding crushed brick or gravel to your setup for turbidity?

Pre-filtering with sand, charcoal, old T-shirts—yes to all of those, especially if your water source is murky or has visible debris. I’ve actually used a layered bucket system: gravel on the bottom, then sand, then charcoal, with the actual filter (like a Berkey) as the last stage. Makes a world of difference and the main filter lasts way longer. For solar disinfection, I’ve only found it practical for emergencies when nothing else is available. Clear PET bottles, shaken and left in strong sun six hours or so—but if the water’s cloudy, it’s just not enough. Sometimes I’ve let water settle overnight, then poured off the clear top layer before filtering, which helps too.

For bigger batches, those gravity-fed setups are hard to beat. Homemade ones with food-grade buckets and ceramic filters work well and you don’t need fancy gear. Bit of patience required though—it’s not quick
