Funny how fast you start appreciating every little bit of light when the power's out that long. I found those small USB-rechargeable motion-sensor puck lights really handy—they barely sip power, and you can move them around as needed. I keep a small solar power bank that can top them off during the day, plus it’ll charge my phone in a pinch. For bedside reading, a basic headlamp with rechargeable AAAs worked better than lanterns, since you just point it where you need and don’t waste light.
About water, I rotate jugs every few months, but that “plastic taste” can still creep in. I started adding a couple drops of lemon juice or even a splash of plain bleach (for sanitizing, not flavor!) before storing—and always keep a charcoal filter pitcher on hand. Passing stored water through that before drinking makes a big difference, taste-wise.
Did anyone else run into trouble with fridges/freezers? My chest freezer held up okay, but fridge stuff spoiled so quick… tempted to try ice blocks in coolers next time but curious what others are doing.
