Lessons Learned From My First 72-Hour Power Outage

Lost power for 72 hours last week—biggest surprise was how fast batteries drain, even with LED lanterns. Anyone have recommendations for reliable low-draw lighting setups or rechargeable solutions that don’t break the bank? Also, how do you keep your water from getting that stale taste after sitting in storage?

Funny how fast you start appreciating every little bit of light when the power's out that long. I found those small USB-rechargeable motion-sensor puck lights really handy—they barely sip power, and you can move them around as needed. I keep a small solar power bank that can top them off during the day, plus it’ll charge my phone in a pinch. For bedside reading, a basic headlamp with rechargeable AAAs worked better than lanterns, since you just point it where you need and don’t waste light.

About water, I rotate jugs every few months, but that “plastic taste” can still creep in. I started adding a couple drops of lemon juice or even a splash of plain bleach (for sanitizing, not flavor!) before storing—and always keep a charcoal filter pitcher on hand. Passing stored water through that before drinking makes a big difference, taste-wise.

Did anyone else run into trouble with fridges/freezers? My chest freezer held up okay, but fridge stuff spoiled so quick… tempted to try ice blocks in coolers next time but curious what others are doing.

I switched to those little hand-crank LED flashlights—don’t need batteries at all, and they’re surprisingly bright. For the water, have you tried storing it in glass jars instead of plastic? That helped cut down on the stale taste for me.
