Emerging Flu Strain Sparks Concern in Southern California

As the holiday season is in full swing, the incidence of flu cases is on the rise. A new strain of flu reaching Southern California has given public health experts a reason to be concerned.

Now is an ideal time to take precautions to safeguard yourself and your loved ones.

Widespread Illness Leads to School Closures

Across the nation, numerous schools have decided to start their winter break earlier than planned due to a surge in sickness among students.

Audrey Garrett, mother of two, shared her family's experience with the flu-like symptoms. She said, "We are just recovering from illness. My son had a fever and my daughter had a severe cough, especially at night."

Expressing her worry, Dr. Dawn Tereshita, a public health expert, mentioned, "Last year's flu season was particularly harsh in Los Angeles. The possibility of this year being worse is quite alarming."

The New H3N2 Flu Variant

Dr. Tereshita, who oversees the monitoring of communicable diseases at a health department in L.A. County, cautioned about a new H3N2 flu variant. This variant is particularly challenging as it's more difficult for our immune systems to identify.

"This new subclade K is still a mystery to us," she stated. "We aren't sure of its implications yet, but given its widespread presence, we are keeping a close eye on it."

Effectiveness of the Season's Flu Vaccine

The new flu variant does not perfectly match this season's flu vaccine. However, health experts still believe that getting a flu shot can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness, including the likelihood of hospitalization or death.

"Any measure that can prevent a hospital visit is worth considering. There are also antiviral medications available for those who fall ill," Dr. Tereshita added.

Precautionary Measures and Medications

Dr. Tereshita recommended antiviral drugs like Tamiflu and a new medication called Xofluza. She advised people exhibiting symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and body aches to consult their doctors as these medications are most effective when taken at the onset of symptoms.

"The key advice is to maintain hand hygiene, stay home if you are feeling unwell, and wear a mask if you need to go out," Dr. Tereshita emphasized.

Current Flu Activity in California

Despite the increase in respiratory illnesses, Dr. Terashita stated that the flu activity in California still remains low.

However, she encouraged people to get a flu shot if they haven't already, as flu activity typically peaks in the months of January and February.

Washing hands and avoiding crowds makes such a difference, but I'm curious—has anyone actually managed to get Xofluza easily from their doctor yet?
