Teenager Wanted in Relation to University Shooting Incident
Authorities are currently searching for a 17-year-old male in connection with a shooting incident that occurred near a prominent university. The incident, which took place over the weekend, resulted in injuries to five individuals.
The local law enforcement agency has issued a public appeal for any information that could lead to the teenager's location. It's believed that the individual hails from Cedar Rapids.
Multiple Charges Against The Suspect
The County Attorney has announced that the teenager is wanted on several charges. These include five instances of attempted murder, three instances of willful injury causing serious harm, two instances of willful injury causing physical harm, and one instance of being armed with the intention of causing harm.
Victim Conditions
Five people were injured in the incident, with one female victim currently in a critical condition due to a severe head injury. Another victim is stable in the hospital, and the remaining three have been discharged. The injuries dealt to the victims included gunshot wounds to the chest and arm requiring immediate surgery, multiple shots to the leg, a shot to the stomach, and injuries to both legs.
Details of the Incident
The local Police Chief shared details about the incident at a news conference. He explained that video evidence shows the suspect involved in a brawl on East College Street. Witnesses estimate that nearly 40 people were involved in the fight. According to the Police Chief, the teenager acquired a firearm during the altercation. He then distanced himself from the fight and fired six shots into the crowd.
It was emphasized that none of the victims were specifically targeted or involved in the initial fight. The Police Chief also praised two officers who provided immediate medical assistance to victims at the scene. One officer even transported a victim to the hospital in his patrol car.
Investigation and Community Response
So far, the police have seized three firearms and ammunition related to this case and they anticipate more charges will be filed. The public has been very cooperative, with over 150 tips received and close to 36 search warrants obtained.
The incident has had a significant impact on the community. The city's mayor expressed his deep sympathy for the victims and their families, acknowledging the pain and shock experienced by the community. He pledged the city's support as the healing process begins.
The assistant vice president for campus safety at the university announced that additional officers from the university's police department would be deployed in the downtown area, along with extra officers from the local law enforcement agency.
