What’s In Your 72 Hour Emergency Kit Lately?

Just rotated out some old batteries and added a new water filter to my 72-hour kit. Anyone swapped out gear recently for something more compact or multi-use? Always interested in hearing what’s actually getting packed these days, especially on the comms side.

Just finished switching to a smaller crank radio/flashlight combo in mine, saves room and weighs less than my old brick of a radio. Still not thrilled with the tuning (a bit fiddly in low light), but it gets decent reception and the USB charging port actually works. Also swapped out canned food for some high-calorie meal bars—figured less bulk, more energy per bite, plus no can opener to fuss with.

On the comms front, added a whistle with a little notepad and pencil, just in case

Rotated my batteries too—amazing how fast they lose charge just sitting there. Picked up a tiny Baofeng for comms, but still debating if it’s overkill for three days, or worth the peace of mind.

Rotating batteries is one of those chores I keep on the calendar, but it still sneaks up on me. I’m curious which water filter you picked—there are so many lightweight ones out now. I swapped to Sawyer Minis for our family kits because they’re easy for anyone to use and

Swapping out canned goods for bars makes a difference in weight, that’s for sure. I add a little jar of homemade calendula salve—good for scrapes or chapped skin. Still using my old crank radio but eyeing those lightweight ones everyone mentions. Anyone have luck getting good local weather updates on them, or is it mostly static? The comms side always feels tricky to balance—when in doubt, I triple-pack extra batteries.
