What’s In Your 72-Hour Emergency Kit These Days?

Every year or so, I overhaul my 72-hour kit, and it’s always interesting to see what others are packing these days. Lately I’ve been debating swapping out canned food for freeze-dried pouches to cut down on weight. I keep my old manual can opener just in case, but not sure if it’s worth the space now. Curious what you all are prioritizing right now—are there any new must-haves I should consider? Would love to hear what’s changed in your kits lately.

I switched to freeze-dried meals myself last year—makes a huge difference for weight and bulk. Still keep a couple of high-calorie bars and instant coffee, can’t do without either. One thing I added this spring is a small bottle of elderberry syrup, just in case I catch something on the go. Curious if anyone’s got new ideas for water filtration that don’t take up a ton of space?

Swapping out canned goods for freeze-dried has been a game changer for me too—my back thanks me every time I pick up the bag now. Still can’t bring myself to ditch the manual can opener though, since I stash a little tuna and beans in the car kit. Always figure redundancy isn’t a bad

Totally agree about the weight—freeze-dried meals are so much easier to carry, but I do miss the taste of a good can of chili sometimes. I still pack a tiny jar of homemade pickled veggies for a quick morale boost, silly as it sounds. For water, I switched to those Sawyer Mini filters and love how compact they are, plus some purification tabs as backup. Anyone tried solar chargers for small electronics? Wondering if they’re worth the space.
