What’s One Prep You Wish You’d Started Sooner?

If I could go back, I’d have started pressure canning years ago instead of sticking to just water bath methods. Makes such a difference in variety and shelf life, especially for meals with protein. Curious—looking back, what’s one prep or skill you wish you’d tackled earlier? Anything that’s turned out way more valuable than you expected? Always looking for ideas to fill in my own gaps.

Wish I’d started growing medicinal herbs sooner—takes years to build up a good stock and really learn what works best. Anyone else find certain herbs harder to grow than expected?

Absolutely agree that herbs take ages to really pay off. I started dabbling with them back when I still had kids in the house, but honestly didn’t get serious until after a particularly bad storm knocked out access to pharmacies for a week. You don’t just need the plants themselves—you need to know which ones work for what, how to use them safely, and when to harvest for the best potency. That kind of learning isn’t quick!

Sometimes I still get tripped up identifying new herbs in the wild, so labeling and good notes helped me a lot. Out of curiosity, TeaTimeTalisman, which herbs have become staples for you? My standbys are calendula and yarrow—they’re pretty trouble-free and handy in every medicine kit I’ve put together. Growing and drying your own definitely feels like an investment in the future, it’s just not instant gratification like you get with tomatoes or lettuce. Wish I’d had that perspective sooner.
