What’s Your Go-To Skill If The Grid Goes Down?

Herbal medicine would be my top skill—knowing which plants to use for basic first aid or illness if pharmacies run dry. Curious what everyone else would focus on first if the grid went down: food, water, defense, medicine? What’s your strongest self-reliance skill?

Herbal medicine’s a strong choice, especially if we’re cut off from regular supplies for a while. For me, I always lean toward communication skills—being able to reach out for information or connect with others when everything’s gone dark. It’s not just about news or updates, but coordinating help or resources if someone’s in trouble. Out of curiosity, ChamomileCraze, have you done much foraging or are you more into growing your own medicinal plants? Both seem pretty valuable if things really went sideways.
 
If the grid went down, I’d put my energy into food preservation, hands down. Been canning, dehydrating, and fermenting things for years—there’s a huge sense of security knowing you’ve got shelves full of jars and crocks that don’t need electricity. Root cellaring’s another big one, even if all you’ve got is a cool corner in your basement. I’m convinced a lot of folks underestimate how quickly perishable food goes bad without a fridge or freezer, especially in warmer months.

Water management is a close second. Setting up rain barrels and simple filtration systems (think sand and charcoal) isn’t hard but makes a world of difference, especially if you can’t count on
