What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Everyone talks about water, fire, and food, but I almost never see folks mention a proper means of sanitation—like heavy-duty trash bags, lye, and a sturdy shovel for waste management. In a long-term grid-down, a lack of basic sanitation can take you out faster than running out of beans or rice. Am I missing another “boring” but crucial item people tend to overlook? Curious what you all have found gets left out of most prep lists but could make a real difference.

Totally agree—nobody likes to talk about waste, but getting it wrong can make everyone sick fast. Something I rarely see on lists is plain old soap, especially the kind you can use for body, clothes, and dishes. People stock sanitizer, but

Absolutely right about trash bags and a shovel—those get overlooked way too often. Lye's an interesting addition; I haven’t tried storing it myself but it makes a lot of sense for serious sanitation. I’d add that a supply of nitrile gloves can really help avoid cross-contamination when dealing with waste or even minor medical issues. Managing hygiene in a pinch is a lot harder than most folks realize until they’ve had to do it.

Completely agree about soap—can't have too much of it, honestly. I’ve also noticed people forget about things like basic feminine hygiene supplies and extra toothbrushes, which get overlooked if nobody in the house needs them right now. They’re so easy to store, and could be a godsend if you end up helping neighbors or family. I wonder if anyone here has actually had to improvise for hygiene in a long power outage?
