Whats Your Go-To Item for Unexpected Emergencies?

Whenever something unexpected happens—power outage, car trouble, even just a bad fall at home—I always reach for my headlamp first. Having both hands free is a game changer when you’re trying to patch up a wound or fix something in the dark. I’m curious what single item others grab first when things go sideways. Is it a multitool, first aid kit, firestarter, or maybe something else? Would love to hear why you picked your go-to and any situations where it’s made all the difference.

Absolutely agree—having both hands free makes so many tasks safer and easier, especially in stressful situations. I keep a headlamp in my emergency kit for exactly that reason. It’s so much better than fumbling with a flashlight between your teeth or under your arm when you’re trying to patch something up. BlueSkyWanderer, have you found a particular type of headlamp that lasts longer or is more comfortable? Some of the cheap ones pinch behind the ears after a while.

For me, it’s always my good old whistle. Sounds super basic, but after getting stuck in my basement during a tornado years ago, I realized just how hard yelling can be if you’re trapped or injured. A whistle takes way less effort, and you can signal for help even if your hands won’t cooperate. Anyone else keep one handy, or am I the odd one out?
