What’s Your Go-To Power Source When the Grid’s Down?

When the grid’s out for days, I rely on a combo of solar panels and a small wood gasifier for backup. Solar’s fine for lights and charging devices, but it gets tricky in cloudy weather, so I’m curious—what’s everyone else using as their primary source? Anyone had luck with wind turbines or is maintenance too much of a hassle? Would love to hear real experiences, especially in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

Solar’s been my first choice for years, but you’re absolutely right about cloudy stretches—especially in late fall when sunlight’s scarce and weak. I keep a small battery bank charged for essentials, but it drains fast if I try to run anything bigger than some lights and the refrigerator. Tried a little wind turbine last winter and honestly, maintenance was more work than I expected. Bearings froze up, some ice buildup on the blades, and it didn’t generate much unless there was a proper storm. I’d say wind might be worth it if you’re in one of those reliably windy areas, otherwise not great payoff.

Wood gasifier’s a smart backup, particularly because wood’s easy enough to source here, though it needs attention and you’ve got to
