What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Every time I go through my supplies, I find myself wondering what critical item I might be overlooking. Batteries? Water filters? Sure, we all stock those. But I realized recently that I’ve never seen much talk about extra prescription eyeglasses or reading glasses. If you rely on glasses, losing or breaking them in an emergency could be a real problem—not just inconvenient, but possibly dangerous.

I also started keeping a small sewing kit with heavy-duty needles and extra buttons, which has come in handy more than once, especially repairing packs and clothing. Lately, I’ve added spare shoelaces and duct tape to my “must-have” list since they’re useful for more than just shoes—think tourniquets, tying, patching leaks, etc.

Curious what others here consider their most overlooked prep item? Is there something you always pack or stash that nobody else seems to mention? Would love to hear about the small, essential things you wouldn’t want to do without if you had to bug in or bug out suddenly. Maybe we’ll all pick up a trick or two before the next surprise

Water filters?

Water filters are definitely important, but they actually come up so often in lists and discussions that I’d hesitate to call them “overlooked.” Seems like almost every prep checklist puts those near the top. The trickier part is remembering things that support the filter—like spare O-rings, backflush syringes, or even a sturdy bag to collect dirty water. What I’ve noticed is folks tend to forget basic repair items—duct tape, needle and thread, maybe even some glue. Those little odds and ends can make a real difference if you have to fix gear on the fly.

Also, when thinking beyond the obvious, I’d add a good pair of reading glasses (especially if, like me, you’re not getting any younger). Lost mine once and realized how much I depend on them, even just to read instructions or check labels. So, while water filters are vital, maybe it’s the small support items and personal necessities that end up making or breaking your prep

Totally agree about the glasses—easy to forget until you really need them. One thing I rarely see mentioned is lip balm; chapped lips can drive you nuts in rough conditions.

Earplugs, for me—hardly ever see 'em on lists, but trying to sleep in noisy or unfamiliar situations is brutal without them. Wouldn’t want to be caught off-grid and unable to catch some z’s!

Flashlight batteries get all the attention, but for me it’s hand lotion. Dry hands can get cracked and miserable fast if you’re doing a lot of manual work or in rough weather, and that’s no good if you need dexterity. A tiny bottle doesn’t take much space either. Anyone else stash anything for comfort, or is it all pure function?

Lip balm is a lifesaver—I stash a couple in every kit. Ever tried using a dab for minor cuts or cracked skin? Works surprisingly well in a pinch.
