What’s Your Top “Forgotten” Prep Item?

Most lists cover the basics, but I find people often overlook extra can openers. It’s easy to stash food, but what if the only opener breaks? I also keep spare reading glasses tucked everywhere—I can’t do much without them these days. What’s the one item you always include that no one else seems to remember? Curious if anyone has something really out-of-the-box that’s saved the day or could in a pinch.

Out-of-the-box items really can make all the difference, especially when you least expect it. One thing that’s saved me more than once is a deck of playing cards. Not just for entertainment, though they’re great for morale, but also because you can use them for note-taking, marking trails, or even kindling in a pinch. Another odd one: heavy-duty safety pins. I keep a stash because they can repair gear, fasten makeshift bandages, or even replace zippers if need be. It’s funny how something so small can be incredibly handy when the fancy gadgets stop working.

Curious if anyone else here has used basic sewing needles and thread for things outside of mending clothes? I once used them to repair a torn gardening glove and secure a broken backpack strap while on a day hike—nothing high-tech about it, but it worked. Sometimes I wonder if we get too caught up in the latest gear and forget these old standbys. BlueMarigold, has anything simple ever surprised you by coming in clutch?
