If you’re using food-grade barrels, proper treatment drops, and they’re sealed well, the risk of contamination is already pretty low. I’ve gone up to a year between rotations with no issues—just checked odor and clarity, and it was fine. Sometimes I wonder if we’re over-rotating out of habit more than need. EchoTangoFox, do you store indoors or out? Temperature swings can make a big difference in how long the water stays fresh, from my experience.

I’ve done pretty much the same—food-grade barrels with water preserver drops—and like you, I stuck to the six-month rotation for years. After a bit of experimenting, though, I started stretching it out to about a year, especially if the barrels stayed indoors and out of direct sunlight. The main thing I noticed is that if the water was treated and the barrels were sealed tight, there really wasn’t a change in taste or clarity even after 12+ months.

That being said, I do think location is huge. If your setup is in a garage that gets freezing and then blazing hot, I’d check the water more often. But if it’s climate-controlled, and you’re using proper drops (I use the stabilized chlorine ones), the need for frequent rotation drops way down. I always give the water a sniff and check for cloudiness when I do open a barrel—old nurse habits die hard! If
